When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
John 8: 12-13
Devotional Message
When we wholeheartedly receive Jesus into our lives, we immediately open our hearts to clarity and direction in moments when life feels confusing and dark. His divine identity is profoundly clear—He doesn’t say that He has the light of the world, but that He is the light of the world. When He was speaking to the disciples during the Feast of Tabernacles, He was guiding them to follow Him at all times, so they would remember that even in moments of deep pain, suffering or darkness, they are not alone. There is a light shining and revealing the path they are walking, where fear and doubt dissolve, and trust and courage are embraced. The words spoken to the disciples were also His communication to all humanity—that if we follow Him, we will walk in the light.
In order to receive Jesus’s light, we must actively follow Him through prayer, studying His Word, and embody to His teachings. His Spirit lives within every believer, here in this moment, and so even if the world around you seems grim, bleak or dark, His light is available to guide and comfort you. To follow Him means both seeking Him through spiritual disciplines and recognizing His presence within us through the Holy Spirit.
When we realize that His light never stops illuminating, our entire world shifts. That light helps us make decisions from a healthier place—walking in alignment with God’s will. It helps us love better, showing up for others with grace and compassion. Our work shifts from just a job to an act of service, where we realize how impactful our energy can be in helping or changing someone else’s life. When we’re connected to Christ, we become vessels through which His light reaches others. And that is how His light carries on—through you, through me, through everyone who follows Him.
Let’s Pray
Dear God, help me follow Jesus more closely so that I can embrace His light through all moments of my life. Sometimes when I feel lost or confused, I feel like I’m walking through spiritual darkness. But today I am asking you to guide me in accessing the light of Christ within me so that I can transform this confusion, despair and spiritual blindness into love, hope and trust. I trust that Jesus’s light will guide me even when I can’t see the full path ahead, and that the more I follow Him, the more I will reflect His light to the world around me. Help me be a vessel through which His light shines to others who are walking in darkness. Amen.
