Devotional Message
There is a kind of work that happens far below the surface of your life, and no one sees it. No one sees the way you paused before responding when the old version of you would have reacted. No one sees the prayer you whispered in the car before walking back into a room that has always been hard for you. No one sees the forgiveness you have been quietly practicing, the boundary you finally held without apologizing for it, the resentment you have been laying down again and again because it keeps trying to grow back. From the outside, your life looks the same. From the inside, you are becoming someone entirely new, and the ache of that unseen becoming is that you have started to wonder if it counts. If heaven is watching. If any of this hidden work is being witnessed at all.
“For God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him.” — Hebrews 6:10 (NIV)
The world measures a life by what it can see. It notices the promotion, the engagement, the move, the milestone — the visible markers of a life that appears to be going somewhere. But heaven measures a life by what only heaven can see. Heaven sees the softening of a heart that used to be so guarded. Heaven sees the moment you chose honesty over the easier lie. Heaven sees the tenderness you extended to yourself on a morning when the old voice inside of you wanted to be cruel. And heaven does not forget these things. The writer of Hebrews is not offering a poetic sentiment here; he is naming a quiet law of the kingdom — that God is not unjust, that God does not overlook, that God does not lose track of the love you have shown him in the places no one else has thought to look.
You have not been doing this alone. You have not been becoming in a vacuum. The work you have been doing in secret has been witnessed by the only One whose witness truly matters, and it has never once been dismissed as small.
There is something in you that has been trained to believe your growth is only real when someone else can name it. That your healing is only valid when it is applauded. That the changes you are making inside of yourself do not count until they produce a visible result the people around you can point to. But this is not the way God sees you. He does not wait for your becoming to be public before he honors it. He does not require your growth to be legible to the people who knew the older version of you before he calls it holy. The seed underground is not less alive than the flower above the soil — it is simply doing a different kind of work, in a different kind of season, at a pace that only the One who planted it fully understands.
And still, the loneliness of the hidden work is real. It is real to keep choosing the harder, gentler thing and wonder if it is making any difference. It is real to feel like you are the only one keeping score of your own progress. It is real to grieve the recognition you thought would come by now — the moment when someone would finally notice how far you have walked, how much you have released, how differently you carry yourself compared to a year ago. You are allowed to feel that ache. You are allowed to name it honestly, without pretending it doesn’t cost you anything to keep going when no one is clapping.
But the truth is — God has never needed a witness to confirm what he already sees. He has been present for every quiet victory you thought no one noticed. He has been near for every prayer you were too tired to finish. He has counted every act of love you offered without expecting anything in return, and he has stored it up in a place that moth and rust cannot reach. The work you have been doing in the dark is not lost. It is not wasted. It is not forgotten. It is being gathered by a God who has always paid attention to the parts of you the world was too busy to notice.
So let yourself exhale today. Let yourself release the ache of feeling unseen. Let yourself trust that the woman you are quietly becoming — the one softer than she used to be, more honest than she used to be, more rooted than she used to be — is being witnessed by the only gaze that has ever been able to hold the whole of you at once. You are not performing your growth for an audience. You are being formed in the presence of a Father who has been watching all along, and who is not, and has never been, unjust with the love you have shown him.
Let’s Pray
God, I have grown tired of doing the quiet work and wondering if it counts. I have carried the ache of feeling unseen in the very places I have been trying hardest, and I am ready to release it into your hands. Remind me that you are not unjust, that you have never once overlooked the love I have shown you, and that the becoming happening in secret is already witnessed and already held. Thank you for seeing me here, in the hidden middle of my growth, before anyone else has noticed. Amen.
